No more wired and tired! Create an oasis of calm by learning to meditate. This class includes instruction in breath awareness, mindfulness, and sitting and walking meditation, with an emphasis on including loving kindness in your relationship with yourself and others. Join us for a "hands-on," supportive approach to getting started with practice and integrating it into daily life. See how mindfulness meditation can help you become more in charge of your health and happiness.
We will follow the practices in Thérèse’s book, Paths Are Made By Walking: Practical Steps to Attaining Serenity — a unique synthesis of brain science and the study of spirit, including practices for creating calm, developing mindful awareness, and observing our reactive habits. Classes include lecture, discussion and guided meditation.
This course includes a free copy of the Paths Are Made By Walking meditation CD.

Deepen your mindfulness practice with continued support and instruction in meditation. For anyone with basic instruction in breath awareness, sitting and walking meditation here at MindRoads or another meditation center.
This class continues the exploration of the Buddhist teaching on the Establishments of Mindfulness. We continue the essential breath awareness practice at the heart of all meditation and look more deeply at practices that cultivate the second and third foundations of mindfulness, “feeling the feelings in the feelings,” and “awareness of the mind in the mind.”
We will continue to study the practices in Thérèse’s book, Paths Are Made By Walking: Practical Steps to Attaining Serenity — a unique synthesis of brain science and the study of spirit, including practices for creating calm, developing mindful awareness, and observing our reactive habits. The following practices are covered in the Continuing Fundamentals of Meditation class:
- First Foundation: “Feeling the body in the body” (Reviewed)
- Breath Awareness (“One pointed concentration”)
- Walking Meditation
- Body Scanning
- Mantra Practice
- Second Foundation: “Feeling the feelings in the feelings”
- Awareness of sensations in the body (heat, tingle, itch; sight, sound, taste, tactile sensations)
- When feeling an emotion, noticing the experience of the emotion in the mind (or a specific emotion, such as sad, glad, mad, guilty, afraid or ashamed)
- Sitting Meditation
- Daily Exam
- Third Foundation: “Awareness of the mind in the mind”
- Noticing the weather coloration or mood of the mind
- Still Mountain Meditation

Open your capacity to receive goodness with this class on Loving-Kindness. We will look at the beautiful Eastern practice of “Metta” (loving kindness and compassion), meditations that revive hope and joy, remove tension and struggle, and build harmony in our relationships with others.
In this six-week seminar, you will:
- Practice mindfulness of your breath, body and feelings
- Develop awareness of your needs and desires
- Cultivate greater openheartedness and generosity toward yourself and others
- Deepen your acceptance of yourself "just as we are"
- Use the power of your intention to wish for our well-being and the well-being of others
This class introduces classic loving kindness meditation, a protection meditation, and practices for healing the inner critic. It combines silent meditation, guided meditation, mini-presentations, discussion, and class handout-outs.

Mindfulness and meditation training can benefit many types of psychotherapy, benefiting people with symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and loss.
Expected Outcomes
Through a combination of presentation and interactive activities, you will learn how mindfulness and loving kindness meditation practices can help you stay open and present to your clients. You will also learn how to integrate these activities you’re your therapeutic interventions with clients.
Learning Objectives
- Become familiar with current research on the effects of mindfulness and meditation on the brain and its clinical applications for treating depression, anxiety, trauma and loss
- Learn the role of breath awareness and other meditation techniques in developing emotional awareness, self-soothing, and self-regulation
- Directly experience and learn skills in mindfulness, loving kindness meditation, and tong-len practice.
- Explore ways that mindfulness and loving kindness practices can increase acceptance and empathy in the therapeutic relationship
- Learn clear-cut procedures for practicing mindfulness and loving kindness meditation techniques and implementing mindfulness meditation techniques with clients.
Workshop Description
The morning sessions explore how we can use meditation to take care of ourselves and do clinical work without burning our or becoming overwhelmed by powerful emotions.
In the afternoon sessions, we introduce the Buddhist practice of Tong-len, or “sending and taking,” as a means of deepening our attention and empathy to clients and learn how to teach mindfulness skills and techniques to our clients.
The workshop includes features such as illustrative case examples, practice exercises and resource listings.

Join us for this introductory class because you’re curious, interested in starting a meditation practice, or want to begin deeper spiritual study.
This five-session class gives you a familiarity with the basics of meditation practice, offering an overview of Zen philosophy and teaching. We will consider questions such as:
- Why sit in meditation?
- How do Buddhist recommendations for moral behavior apply to my life?
- Can a Zen Buddhist paradigm apply to my family life?
Emphasis will be placed on practical application and participants will be encouraged to choose a goal for their meditation practice during this class.

Work-Study Grant Program
In this program, students donate volunteer time in exchange for grant money. MindRoads Meditation Center benefits from your contribution of labor and you are able to attend classes or practice circles for a reduced fee.
